Wishing on a star

The Lake Tekapo area is famous for its clear skies so on my second night I drove towards the middle of nowhere to see what the fuss was about. After a possum-dodging mini-adventure, I turned off the lights, got out of the car, and said “WOW!” out loud, even though there was nobody to hear. I was impressed by the night sky in Milford but this was something else. It felt like you could see everything there was to see, without the need for a telescope. I lay against Greg and stared up at the Milky Way, Mars, and what seemed like billions of stars. I even saw a shooting star, so I made a wish. Whether or not it comes true remains to be seen. It was so dark I couldn’t tell that I was next to a field of cows until one mooed so loudly it made me jump. Then I heard voices coming from the nearby farm, and I actually thought I might be shot at, so I left quickly and headed back to town.
